Tokyo day trip to Kamakura

What a day! It started with a rather long and stressful train ride from Tokyo. This town has a lot of trains and even more people riding them! But eventually the buildings gave way to hills and small towns as we made our way to our destination - Kamakura.

After a short visit to a temple and a bite to eat, we boarded a very cute single-track train across town. At that point I realized - hey, I can stand in the very front and look out the window!

Our destination was the "Daibutsu" or "great Buddah." He was pretty cool, not exactly the Eiffel Tower or Grand Canyon, but he is around 800 years old and very peaceful.

Maybe even cooler were the many shops lining the street up to the temple. Not kitsch, but actual cool stuff. Sweets, beans, foodstuffs, and Samurai gear.

Kamakura actually has dozens of temples. But with youngsters, the main attraction was the beach.

Not exactly Hawaii, but a beach on the Pacific Ocean nonetheless. After this picture, they got into the water and frolicked for a couple of hours! We made some friends and got too much sun.

We walked back to town along a beautiful boulevard. It was getting late so we decided to stop for dinner. Across the street we found Kaiten Zushi - conveyer belt Sushi!

Only in Japan can you fill up on fresh sushi and it's actually cheap. We cleaned sixteen plates and it came to about 25 bucks. The girls enjoyed it plenty - Benna is behind me in this picture, watching the Sushi go around!

Every day here feels like a lifetime!

  2. What a wonderful blog - I really had a bit of the feeling of being there. I wish I was! I'm curious about the girls reactions to the great variety of trains you've seen and been on. Do they have any interest in standing in the front and watching the tracks ahead and fantasizing that they are the engineer? The sushi sounded scrumptious? Did Aleeza find some that she liked? What is Benna's favorite? Have a good ride up the Sendai. We're anxious to hear about the place, the family you're staying with, etc. Love from Mom and me.
